Here’s a few images of the lake I took the other day. Stunning beauty everywhere. Yeah, that’s why we live here.

Not Really Redding, but just up the road a bit.

Just a reminder that it’s Spectator Appreciation Weekend at the Redding Dragstrip, and admission to the eastside is FREE FREE FREE. Come on out for inexpensive thrills!

Tough economy got you down? How does FREE sound? I thought so. More Details.

So gorgeous. Bring your boats!

Yesterday’s video reminded me that I did a sort of naturescape video/photo tour of Redding last February, and then never posted it. Take a look.
Fairy Rings in our fair city from Skip Murphy on Vimeo.
During a break in our Winter weather, I went to a bluff overlooking the Sacramento River to shoot some panoramas of my town, Redding California, poised beneath newly snow dusted mountains. While shooting, I noticed the really interesting activity that was taking place at my feet. Fairy Rings of mushrooms were scattered about around the Valley Oaks on the bluff. Evidently this is a good year for fungus of all sorts. Back in the studio, I tried to create music ’scenery’ that reflected the photographic images, and the spirit they evoke. My first attempt at using Vimeo, which is a quite nice service. As an early experiment, I think it turned out interesting. But that’s just me. It is Really Redding.
Just a few of Friday’s racing images. Come out tonight for MORE!

Bob has some seriously fast cars out this year. Amazing machines.

The track conditions should be better today than Friday. Records will be broken…

Samie Felker hit the wall at speed. Yikes. She’s OK. Her Renault, not so much…

F-16s fly in and out of Redding Airport? Who knew? Very impressive in itself.

“No Bar Too Far,” says the sign on Ralph Lederer’s motorized barstool. Friendly culture in the pit area belies serious competition on the track.

It’s Really Redding.
It’s April 15. A special day, ahem. Nobody wants to pay taxes, but everybody wants more services. Before you go off on *insert enemy name here* you may enjoy this classic video from John Cleese:
The enemy list may change, but Monty Python remains. I know when I think about extremists and other irony-challenged individuals and groups, they are such very bad persons, and if it wasn’t for them, I’d actually be good-natured, and courteous, and rational all the time.
We spent a few days in Sacramento. Not by choice, but on matters pertaining to real estate training. The visit to the city was enlightening. The same traffic, the same lack of parking, the hustle. Although housing was a large part of Sacramento industry, the downturn hasn’t impacted them as much as it has our town. Obviously, a larger part of their economy is based on government spending. And spending is up. A lot. Just few hours south, Sacramento has a much different feel than Redding.

Coming from Redding, another thing noticable is how many languages are spoken there. At a shopping mall, I heard Russian, Chinese, and Spanish, often combined with English. A language mashup. Emblematic of the Sacramento culture, this mall cart sells language training by Rosetta Stone. Not a business model that might ‘translate’ to Redding, or so I think. I set up the shot while the cart vendor looked the other way, but he got that creepy “somebody is looking at me” feeling, and turned his head to look as I hit the shutter.
As though to drive the point home, a woman approached me in the mall and asked if was looking for work. I was bit taken aback. “No?” she went on, “Well do you know anyone who is?” Well yeah. I do. About a quarter of Redding, by my estimation.
RABA is the Redding Area Bus Authority. They are the only local mass transit system in the greater Redding area. They also contract with a bus service to Burney. They operate 6 days a week about 12 hours a day. They have stops about ¼ mile apart on the 14 routes. As of this publication the base fare is $1.50 and children under 6 are free. There are a number of monthly passes available. They currently serve about 50,000 people a month. You are encouraged to learn more about our local transit system at their website:

We are lucky to have this system in our town. Redding is a difficult place to get around in without a car. RABA offers a GREEN alternative to automobile ownership. Hopefully they can expand to Palo Cedro and perhaps Shingletown, or even Weaverville someday. Thanks RABA!

I’ve been helping the local Society of Brewers set up their website. It’s up and running, so set your bookmarks and RSS feeds. No doubt it will gaining momentum quickly. Click on the image to go there, or type http://www.ShastaSOB.org

In my individual circle of life, there’s no shortage of this particular talent. But this person felt compelled to announce on the back of their car that it’s their only talent. Well, it pays to specialize, one supposes. As seen in a Redding parking lot.

Really Redding
